Internship program

Newion has launched our internship program and welcomed our first intern in August. Our internship program is an opportunity for ambitious students and recent graduates to learn about the venture capital industry and work alongside our team in sourcing, assessing investment opportunities and management of portfolio companies.

Below is an introduction about Newion's first intern Jeffe Mathew.

In January 2020, I officially finished university and had to plan what was next. I was a fresh 22-year-old postgraduate (MSc Finance & Investments), who had just come back from international exchange, looking warily at the job market. I learnt about VC during my bachelors (BSc Economics), but it was only after talking to a Partner in the UK did my intrigue begin to develop. I met him during my previous internship, and I delved deep into the world of venture capital following our conversation. The more I read, the more attractive this industry appeared. Everyone who worked in this industry loved it, became addicted to it and never left. It’s understandable why. Where else can you help a company grow in a way that can potentially impact the lives of millions of people? Where else can you help the companies of tomorrow, today? Of course, this job is about making a return, but few jobs can give you that sense of accomplishment. To be able to talk with entrepreneurs, feed off their passion and learn about new potential industries of the future is captivating. As someone who loves to learn about new technology and what the future can bring, the move to VC was a no brainer.

My welcome to Newion was better than I could have hoped. The team is incredibly friendly, with a wide array of skills and knowledge. It is a joy to work alongside them every day, and in all honesty, I was eager to start working after COVID-19 delayed my start date. When I started my internship, I had a rough plan of what I wanted. I assumed that the first month would consist of learning, and then in the following months, I would add real value. I wrote out a list of skills that I wanted to know, including writing investment memos, evaluating pitches/ reviewing business plans performing market research along with many other skills. I have had the opportunity to do almost everything already but personally, the thing that excites me the most each day is talking to entrepreneurs about their companies. This industry is people orientated, and these entrepreneurs are on the front lines of innovation.

I have thoroughly enjoyed my first few weeks here, and the more time I spend at the firm, the more I believe that VC is the right fit for me. It is still early days, and I continue to learn a lot each day, but I am genuinely grateful for this opportunity. I look forward to working with the best European entrepreneurs and further expanding Newion’s portfolio of successful investments.
